It is one of the members of the <a title=\"United Nations Development Group\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Development_Group\">United Nations Development Group<\/a> and its Executive Committee.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF was created by the <a title=\"United Nations General Assembly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_General_Assembly\">United Nations General Assembly<\/a> on December 11, 1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by <a title=\"World War II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>. <a title=\"Maurice Pate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Pate\">Maurice Pate<\/a>, American humanitarian and businessman, co-founded the United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund (UNICEF) with <a title=\"Herbert Hoover\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herbert_Hoover\">Herbert Hoover<\/a> in 1947. Pate served as its first executive director from 1947 until his death in 1965.\u00a0In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent part of the<a title=\"United Nations System\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_System\">United Nations System<\/a> and its name was shortened from the original <b>United Nations International Children&#8217;s Emergency Fund<\/b> but it has continued to be known by the popular <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Acronym and initialism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acronym_and_initialism\">acronym<\/a> based on this previous title.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF relies on contributions from governments and private donors, UNICEF&#8217;s total income for 2008 was $3,372,540,239.\u00a0Governments contribute two thirds of the organization&#8217;s resources; private groups and some 6 million individuals contribute the rest through the National Committees. It is estimated that 91.8% of their revenue is distributed to Program Services.\u00a0UNICEF&#8217;s programs emphasize developing community-level services to promote the health and well-being of children. UNICEF was awarded the <a title=\"Nobel Peace Prize\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nobel_Peace_Prize\">Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> in 1965 and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Prince of Asturias Awards\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_of_Asturias_Awards\">Prince of Asturias Award<\/a> of Concord in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Most of UNICEF&#8217;s work is in the field, with staff in over 190 countries and territories. More than 200 country offices carry out UNICEF&#8217;s mission through a program developed with host governments. Seventeen regional offices provide technical assistance to country offices as needed.<\/p>\n<p>Overall management and administration of the organization takes place at its headquarters in New York. UNICEF&#8217;s Supply Division is based in <a title=\"Copenhagen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copenhagen\">Copenhagen<\/a> and serves as the primary point of distribution for such essential items as <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Vaccines\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vaccines\">vaccines<\/a>, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Antiretroviral drug\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antiretroviral_drug\">antiretroviral medicines<\/a> for children and mothers with <a title=\"HIV\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HIV\">HIV<\/a>, nutritional supplements,<a title=\"Emergency shelter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emergency_shelter\">emergency shelters<\/a>, <a title=\"Family Tracing and Reunification\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Family_Tracing_and_Reunification\">family reunification<\/a>, educational supplies, among others. A 36-member Executive Board establishes policies, approves programs and oversees administrative and financial plans. The Executive Board is made up of government representatives who are elected by the <a title=\"United Nations Economic and Social Council\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Economic_and_Social_Council\">United Nations Economic and Social Council<\/a>, usually for three-year terms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"thumb tright\"><\/div>\n<p>Recent <a title=\"Executive director\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Executive_director\">executive directors<\/a> of UNICEF include <a title=\"Carol Bellamy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carol_Bellamy\">Carol Bellamy<\/a> (1995\u20132005), a former head of the <a title=\"Peace Corps\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peace_Corps\">Peace Corps<\/a>, and <a title=\"Ann Veneman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ann_Veneman\">Ann Veneman<\/a> (2005-2010), a former <a title=\"United States Secretary of Agriculture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Secretary_of_Agriculture\">United States Secretary of Agriculture<\/a> whose mandate included increasing the organization&#8217;s focus on the <a title=\"Millennium Development Goals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Millennium_Development_Goals\">Millennium Development Goals<\/a>. Since 2010, the current Executive Director of UNICEF has been<a title=\"Anthony Lake\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Lake\">Anthony Lake<\/a>, a former US <a title=\"National Security Advisor (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Security_Advisor_(United_States)\">National Security Advisor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF is an intergovernmental organization (IGO) and thus is accountable to those governments.
