Deputy Minister inaugurates Ministerial Steering Committee on Maternal and Child Health

The Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Alexander K. Abban has on behalf of the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu inaugurated a 25-member Ministerial Steering Committee for the Ghana-China Bilateral Cooperation Project on Maternal and Child Health.
This is a follow-up to a High-Level Presidential visit to China by H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in September 2018, and an agreement signed between the two nations to undertake the project to improve maternal and child health services in Ghana.
Hon. Abban in his address observed that the health of a nation could be measured by the health of its mothers and the children, adding, “If the woman, who is the main vessel for procreation is not healthy we are not going to have a healthy population”.
He described members of the committee as worthy ambassadors to operationalise the agreement sign between the two Heads of State and called on the experts to fashion out strategies to operationalise the project.
The team leader of the 8th China Medical Team, and the representative of the Economic and Commercial Counsellor’s Office of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana, Dr Qiuhong Liu, said China has always regarded Ghana as a reliable friend and a good partner.
This, he said, was reiterated by the Chinese President, H.E. Xi Jinping when he met his Ghanaian Counterpart, President Nana Akufo-Addo during the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
“The friendship between Ghana and China will be hopefully grown stronger and stronger in the years ahead”, he added.
The Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Nana Kwabena Adjei-Mensah in his welcome address, thanked the Chinese Government for their assistance to the health sector, especially the LEKMA Hospital.
The Medical Superintendent of the LEKMA Hospital, Dr Mrs Juliana O. Ameh, made a presentation on the hospital.
