President Mahama cut sod for the commencement of construction of 10 Polyclinics in the Central Region at Gomoa Dawurampong

President John Mahama, has cut the sod for the commencement of construction of 10 polyclinics in the Central region, last Friday.

The sod cutting ceremony which took place in Gomoa Dawurampong where the first facility is to be built, was ennobled by chiefs and elders of the community in a colorful ceremony.

Three of the ten (including the one at Dawurampong) will be 30-bed facilities, and the rest will have 15 beds each. The ten polyclinics project to be undertaking by VAMED, will be completed in 24 months.

Each facility is expected to have an operating theatre, delivery room, X-ray machine and ultrasound, separate wards for children, women and men, consulting rooms, a mini morgue and two apartments for staff.

Other communities to benefit from the project include; Bisease, Binpong Akunfude, Etsii Sunkwa, Asikuma Gyamena, Agona Duakwa, Biriwa, Ekumfi Naakwa, Twifo Atimokwa, Gomoa Potsin all in in the central region.

The Osedze Health Center, the current health facility, which caters for 13,000 people in 7 communities, lacks basic amenities and resources; inadequate or broken down beds, limited skilled professionals, oxygen to patients, no ambulance to refer emergency cases to the nearest referral facility, about an hour away, at Apam.

The facility in the face of its imminent challenges conducts over 500 deliveries annually and has recorded no case of maternal mortality for over five years now.

Dr Victor Bampoe, deputy minister of health who was in attendance at the ceremony said each of such facilities have been built in the Upper West, Northern and Brong Ahafo regions, and work will soon commence on five each in the Western and Greater Accra regions.
